Frequently Asked Questions about Substrate-Free Double Sided Tape
QWhat is substrate-free double-sided tape?
Substrate-free (also called carrier-free) tape is a pure adhesive film without any carrier — just the pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, sandwiched between two release liners. It is the thinnest possible double-sided bond and is widely used where conventional tape thickness is unacceptable.
QWhat is the thinnest substrate-free tape you supply?
From 30 μm total thickness upward. Standard stock runs 50-100 μm. Below 30 μm, we offer transfer tape constructions with a similar function but easier converting behaviour — let us know your target thickness and we will specify the right grade.
QIs substrate-free tape optically clear?
Yes — the pure adhesive layer is water-clear and invisible after lamination. It is the standard choice for display bonding, optical film lamination, capacitive touch sensors and other applications where the bond line must be visually undetectable.
QHow is substrate-free tape applied?
Substrate-free tape needs careful handling: expose one liner, apply to substrate A, remove the second liner, then bond to substrate B under light pressure. We can supply pre-cut pieces on liner for automated pick-and-place, or slit rolls for manual application.
QDoes substrate-free tape provide good shear strength?
Pure adhesive films have lower cohesive strength than carrier-reinforced tapes, so they are best suited to flat or near-flat bonding surfaces with moderate shear loads. For structural or high-shear applications, use a carrier-reinforced acrylic foam construction instead.
QIs substrate-free tape suitable for high-temperature environments?
Standard grade: up to 100°C continuous. High-temperature substrate-free tape (acrylic, ~150°C) is available for display bonding, FPC grounding and reflow-solder processes — share your thermal profile so we specify the right adhesive system.
